Abstract:In order to solve several problems, such as spray wall wetting, low squeeze flow intensity and local over-rich mixture in the central shallow basin type combustion chamber of an opposed-piston engine, a solution using a double-sided combustion chamber was proposed, and accordingly the combustion performance of double-sided ω type combustion chamber and double-sided lateral swirl combustion chamber was studied. In order to prevent the change of port phase from reducing indicated power when using double-sided combustion chamber, an engine performance simulation model established by GT-Power software was used to solve the performance degradation due to the difference in scavenging process by changing the port parameters. Then, AVL FIRE software was used to perform three-dimensional simulation analysis on the combustion performance of these different combustion chambers. The simulation results after optimizing the spray angle show that the fuel spray in the double-sided lateral swirl combustion chamber forms wall-flow-guided and interferential interaction, and diffuses to the area where the air is not fully utilized, thus preventing the fuel from accumulating on the wall, and making the mixing of fuel and air more uniform. Therefore, compared with central shallow basin type combustion chamber and double-sided ω type combustion chamber, the double-sided scroll combustion chamber has a faster combustion rate and a higher indicated power. This indicates that the use of double-sided scroll combustion chamber in opposed piston engines is of great significance for improving engine performance.
