Abstract:In order to study the influence of cylinder deactivation on gasoline engine performance, a bench test was conducted on a 4-cylinder gasoline engine for fuel-skipping and exhaust gas recirculation strategy. Results show that the use of two strategies under medium and low loads reduces the fuel consumption of the engine, but the exhaust gas recirculation improves the engine’s heat load with an increase in the initial combustion temperature of combustible mixture, resulting in shortened ignition delay period and reduced cycle to cycle variability, which makes the fuel consumption of the exhaust gas recirculation strategy lower than the fuel-skipping strategy. As the load of working cylinder increases, and the temperature of combustible mixture rises, the influence of returned exhaust gas in the non-working cylinder on initial combustion temperature of combustible mixture in the working cylinder gradually weakens, which eventually makes the fuel consumption of the exhaust gas recirculation strategy basically same as the fuel-skipping strategy. |
